Chaga Tea: A Great Tonic!

In a pot, add a small handful of chaga chunks to one litre of water, and bring to a boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat and let the tea simmer for 5 to 10 minutes.

*These same chunks of chaga can be used 3 times before they are depleted of their medicine. So strain the tea and save the chunks! The second time you use them, let the tea simmer for about 15-20 minutes; the third time, simmer for around 30 minutes or more.

To make a chaga remedy:

Fill half a mason jar with chaga shavings, then pour 50% or more pure vodka (or other grain alcohol). Then lid the jar and let sit in a dark place for a while (10 days or more). Then strain and keep the tincture separate. Put the chaga shavings in a pot and add 2 liters or water. Simmer for a few hours, let it cool and then put the pot in the freezer for a couple of days. Then put the pot back on the stove, add two liters of water and let it simmer for a few hours. When there is only one liter (or less) of water left in the pot, strain and mix it with the tincture. Your double extraction remedy is ready. This is the recipe I use, so if you don’t want to go through the whole process, you can buy it already made from me ;)

*the reason we use alcohol, heat and cold is to break down the chitin cell wall of chaga so that we can have access to the benefits of chaga.

Note that to increase bioavailability of chaga (antioxidants are quite complex molecules) it is best to include good fats into your diet, such as cacao butter, coconut oil, hemp oil,…

Flavours

Chaga has an earthy flavor and a hint of vanilla. It mixes well with chai spices (cardamon, ginger, cloves, anise, fennel, etc.). My partner loves to simply add Reishi into her longer brews. Try this for a warming winter drink.

* Chaga tea may enhance many cooking recipes as well ~ try adding it to your oatmeal instead of water, or using it in the place of water with other sweet recipes.

* Add some to your coffee to neutralize the acids and bring some nutrients into your drink!
